Many businesses these days have a lot of contractors and freelancers that they hire to help them out with some of their business tasks.  Many of these employees do not commute to work on a daily basis.  If you are managing a virtual team for the first time, then you may find yourself with many questions.  It can definitely be troublesome if you don’t know what you are doing.  Here are some tips that will help you manage your team effectively.

  • Make sure that all of the team members have the technology that they need in order to make the team successful. There are sometimes technological problems that arise, and these problems can really become a barrier when it comes to top performance with a virtual team.
  • If you have a diverse virtual team that is made up of people from various different countries, you will want to make sure that you are aware of the fact that there are sometimes differences in culture and religion that may affect their work ethic. You should understand these differences and make allowances when necessary to accept them.
  • From the very beginning, you will need to make sure that the team is aware of the punctuality that you expect. You want to ensure that they are able to meet the deadlines that you put into place.  If you put the ground rules down upfront, you can avoid major conflicts in the future.
  • As the manager and leader of the team, you will want to make sure that you trust your team to work with you to help you come up with answers to problems that may arise. You should also trust them to take certain matters into their own hands to ensure that work gets done in a timely manner.
  • If it is possible, it is sometimes a good idea to have a face to face meeting with your virtual team at some point. Teams will usually work better together if they have an opportunity to meet one another and bond.
